Lifting slings are designed to move large, bulky, heavy loads that would be extremely difficult if not impossible to move manually. they provide a direct connection from your lifting equipment, be it an electric hoist, or a crane to the load that you are using. Whenever you are lifting with lifting slings it is important that you take the following steps into consideration:

Always inspect the sling for damage before use
Never use a damaged lifting sling. If the sling were to break whilst in use, could end up dropping the load; this could cause injuries, or fatalities in the work place, and could lead to damages to expensive equipment. Make sure you always check your lifting slings before use.
Make sure you have chosen the right lifting sling for the job ahead.
There are 2 types of lifting slings, round slings and webbing slings. Webbing slings have a larger surface area to help protect the load, where as round slings offer flexibility, and can mould to irregular load shapes.
Do not exceed the working load limit of the lifting sling

To determine which lifting sling you need you will need to know the weight of the load that you are lifting. If you are lifting a load that is 17 tonnes, then you will need to use a lifting sling with the Working Load Limit of 20 tonnes instead of 15 tonnes to support the weight. Every lifting sling has a different WLL. If this limit is exceeded you could damage the lifting sling that you are using, the load that you are lifting. Ensure the load is secured.

All slings must be securely attached to the load in a manner that provides maximum control, and prevents any slipping, sliding and movement of any loose parts of the load. When attaching the slings, it is important that a train individual determines the most appropriate method of rigging.
Make sure the lifting point is directly above the centre of gravity

When lifting a heavy load it is important that you have determined the centre of gravity before your begin lifting. Determining the centre of gravity is vital to achieving total control over the load that you are lifting. If the load isn’t restrained correctly, the centre of gravity will move directly under the lifting point, this could cause the load to swing, which could lead to the load being damaged or cause injury to other workers.

The Executive Hire show first started in 2007, with the aim of creating an event where hirers can meet suppliers. The executive hire show is a trade-only event only open to hire executives throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland. The show attracts executives from procurement and purchasing departments of large national hire companies as well as independent hire companies.

Alongside well-known companies such as, JCB, SafetyLiftinGear will be exhibiting over 2 stands. One promoting our height safety, confined space access and rescue and tool safety ranges and the second promoting our material handling and load restraint products. Expect to see promotions on pallet trucks and material lifts all day!

Improve Your Lifting Safety in 2016

Lifting heavy equipment can be extremely dangerous. It is crucial that correct training and equipment is used to prevent accidents and fatalities in the workplace.

Last year it was reported that a 37 year old warehouse worker died in a tragic accident on his first shift as saw operator for a business in the Cardiff docks area.

There were no eye witnesses to the accident but it is believed that the worker may have been attempting to attach lifting chains around a girder unsupervised. Staff members found him pinned between two pieces, attempts were made to remove the girder but Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

Although training was provided, there was no clear instruction about which method for moving or cutting the two tonne steel columns should be used. It came to light that the company did not have written guidance on how to lift the girders, leaving their employees to create their own ways.

The company was fined £112,000 and ordered to pay £98,000 in costs.

Accidents like these, whether they end in a fatality like the above case, or a worker ends up hurt are tragic, because they are so easily preventable.

As an employer it is your responsibility to ensure that your employees are working in a safe environment by providing comprehensive training to all your employees and training them to use the right equipment and wear the correct PPE at all times.

Before engaging in any type of heavy lifting, you need to ensure that all of your equipment meets or exceeds the working load limit (WLL) of the load you are planning on lifting or moving.

Additionally you must also ensure that any lifting tasks are correctly planned, supervised and conducted in a safe manner, with people who are fully trained to use the equipment needed. You must also perform an inspection of all the lifting equipment that you will be using. Do not use equipment that is worn or damaged in any way.
