What is LOLER?
LOLER is the short name for the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998. This piece of UK Government legislation has been in effect since 5th December 1998, and its goal is to reduce the risk of injury and damage during lifting operations.
The regulations state that lifting equipment must be thoroughly examined for defects before being put into service for the first time, and that further inspections must be carried out by a competent person at regular intervals over the course of the equipment's working lifespan.

How often are LOLER inspections required?
Under the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations...
- Lifting accessories, and equipment that is used to lift people, must be inspected every 6 months.
- Other types of lifting equipment must be inspected every 12 months.
- More frequent inspections may be required depending on use and environment.
