Effective working length (or EWL for short) refers to the usable length of a lifting sling, measured from bearing to bearing.
To put it more simply: EWL is the length between the sling's contact points.

Chain Sling EWL
When you're measuring a chain sling like the one pictured below, the EWL is measured from the inside of the top of the master ring down to the inside of the bottom of the hook.
Webbing Sling EWL
Webbing slings like the one pictured below have an eye at each end, so the EWL is the length between the insides of the eyes.
Round Sling EWL
Endless round slings can be tricky. Some manufacturers measure the sling's circumference, but this tends to cause confusion, so here at Safety Liftin Gear we use EWL instead. The effective working length is measured from one end of the sling to the other when it's hung up or laid flat.
