There's no room for error when you're transporting a live animal – especially a dangerous predator like a jaguar! SafetyLiftinGear recently assisted Dartmoor Zoological Society with the relocation of one of their big cats, supplying the load restraints that were needed to help keep the transport crate secure throughout the move.
Dartmoor Zoo is the zoological park in Devon that was famously purchased by Benjamin Mee in 2006. His memoir inspired the 2011 film We Bought a Zoo, starring Matt Damon as Benjamin. Today, Dartmoor Zoo continues to care for a wide range of animals while supporting conservation, research and education.
When moving a powerful live animal, the restraint setup needs to be carefully planned. The crate must remain shut and stable during handling and transit, and the team around it need enough control to carry out the move safely and efficiently.
For this job, our heavy-duty load restraints were used to secure the jaguar's transport crate before it was moved around the site.

Securing the load
Load restraint equipment is most commonly used to secure pallets, plant machinery and construction materials, but the same basic principle applies when you're transporting a live jaguar: the load must be properly secured before it is moved.
Of course, this sort of situation does pose a few extra challenges. The load can shift from within the crate, and even small movements can complicate the physics of the move. This makes reliable restraints even more important than usual. Every strap, fixing point and anchor position needs to be checked before the move begins.

Real-world handling conditions
As the photos above show, this was not a simple warehouse move on a clean, level floor. The team had to work carefully around the zoo grounds, using a vehicle to position and transport the crate while keeping communication clear at every stage.
These are the kinds of real-world conditions where reliable equipment is absolutely crucial. Restricted access, uneven ground and live cargo all add complexity to the job.
Good-quality load restraints help to keep this type of operation controlled and predictable. That matters whether you are securing machinery, building materials or a crate that contains one of nature's most powerful predators.

Choosing the right load restraint equipment
Before selecting load restraints for any job, it is important to consider the weight of the load, the available anchor points, the method of transport and the on-site conditions.
The straps should be correctly rated for the application and inspected before use. Any equipment showing signs of wear, cuts, damaged stitching, corrosion or deformation should be taken out of service and replaced.
For specialist jobs like this one, planning is just as important as the equipment itself. The restraint method must suit the load, the vehicle or handling equipment being used, and the route the load will take.
Here at SafetyLiftinGear, we supply a wide range of ratchet straps, lashings and other types of load restraint equipment for professional use across many different industries. From everyday transportation to specialist handling tasks like this jaguar relocation at Dartmoor Zoo, our team can help you choose the right equipment for each and every job.
