Today, we want to talk you through our selection of high-quality load arrestors from Globestock - these robust products are designed to make sure that heavy loads don't fall when being lifted, even if the load's primary support system fails.

How do they work?

Each G-Guard fall arrestor consists of a retractable safety line that works in a similar way to a seatbelt in a car. If a load drops suddenly whilst attached to this line, the load arrestor's fall protection brake will automatically kick in and prevent the load from crashing to the ground. The brake's shock-absorbent properties minimise the force of the load arrestor, protecting the load from damage and the user from injury.

Why should I use a load arrestor?

Back-up measures like these fall arrestors are important in case your lifting equipment suddenly fails while you are raising a heavy or valuable load. Failure to Use Correct Equipment Leads to More Worker Falls!

Time and time again, we're seeing companies causing serious worker injuries and incurring huge fines, as a direct result of failing to use the correct fall prevention equipment!

Just yesterday, we shared this story from HSE, which details the life-changing fall of a worker down a lift pit. The worker was not only left with a slew of broken bones and a punctured lung, but was also rendered unable to return to work in the future as a result. On examination, the construction site in Cardiff was found to be poorly managed, with the investigation also revealing that an unsuitable system of lightweight barriers and beanbags (which had been removed), had been used as a feeble attempt at provide fall-prevention.

A similar case, published by SHP at the end of last week, also detailed a set of serious injuries to a 63-year-old employee, who was conducting work on a school roof. In this case, however, the fall protection wasn't simply insufficient, but completely non-existent! The worker's injuries included a broken collar bone, as well as a chipped vertebrae, resulting in the school being fined £40,000 and ordered to pay £1,477 in costs, for breaching the Work at Height Regulations 2005. Upon inspection, no guardrails or alternative form of fall protection were found, creating a deadly mix in combination with the lack of adequate supervision and planning.

When it comes to working on a roof, or similarly high space whilst performing construction and maintenance work, it is of vital importance that workers are properly protected. When there is a steep drop or sharply plunging edge near the area where operations are being conducted, it is highly important that the correct use of edge protection systems are implemented. Anthony Lambert and Louis Nethercott are two former Royal Marine Commandos who are aiming to set a new world record by traversing Earth's five largest islands (Borneo, Papua New Guinea, Madagascar, Greenland, and Baffin Island) on foot. They're calling this endeavour Expedition 5, as you can probably imagine, it's an absolutely mammoth undertaking that will demand a lot of careful planning, a lot of strength and determination, and - crucially - a good deal of expedition equipment and safety gear.

Once again, a demolition company from Nottingham has been fined for breeching height safety procedures, for allowing their employees to work on a roof without any fall prevention measures in place.

Luckily, this case did not lead to a fatal accident or serious injury, but this most certainly could have been the case if the issue had been left undetected.

The company in question were removing tiles from a steep roof without any form of PPE or fall arrest equipment, which meant that the individuals could have come to serious harm, had they fallen and slipped whilst carrying out the work. Those responsible were fined £6,000 by the courts, and were ordered to pay £765 in costs, although the financial debt is nothing compared to the guilt they would have had to endure if something had gone wrong.

Whether it's in the form of bank note, or worse, the life of an unsuspecting worker, those who ignore height safety will have to pay out eventually. That's why it's important to invest in proper height safety gear, to save money and lives, as well as securing your company's reputation.
