What should I consider when buying a head torch?
Before buying a head torch, there are a few things to consider.
Brightness
First, think about how bright you need it to be or the ‘light output’. The brightness of a head torch is measured in lumens. Put simply, the higher the lumen rating, the brighter the head torch.
How many lumens do I need for a head torch?
Torches not only light the way for you, but they alert others to your presence. That’s why it’s important to think about what conditions you’ll be in when using a head torch. If you just intend on using your head torch around a campsite or in urban areas, you should be fine with 100-250 lumens.
However, if you plan on running or hiking off-road at night, it’s recommended that you invest in a head torch with around 600-900 lumens.
There are lots of options in between so be sure to read product descriptions before buying.
Waterproof rating
You also need to think about whether you need a waterproof head torch and how waterproof you need it to be. On the waterproof scale, for a product to be consider waterproof it must have an IP rating of IP65-67. However, if you plan on spending prolonged amounts of time getting your head torch wet, you’ll need a far higher IP rating.
Battery life
Finally, battery life is an important factor to consider. Check the max running time in the product description, this will tell you how long the head torch will last on one charge or with fresh batteries. Obviously, the longer you intend to use your head torch in one session, the longer max running time you’ll want it to have. Typically, the better the max running time, the more money you’ll need to spend.
