Engineering Company Fined after Man Falls from Roof

There’s a reason that carrying out risk assessments and wearing PPE is a legal requirement in the UK – unfortunately, some learn the importance of these necessities the hard way.

Craven and Nicholas Engineering Ltd has been fined after one of its employees fell through a roof when working at height in Boston. The worker in question fell through a fragile roof and fell 6 metres, sustaining injuries to his head and arm.

Investigation by the Health and Safety Executive found that a proper risk assessment and plan of action had not been conducted for this work at height.

This lack of planning meant that cautionary measures that could have prevented this accident from occurring were not put into place. The engineering company were subsequently fined £14,000 and ordered to pay £6,541.80 in costs.

Following the hearing, HSE inspector Tim Nicholson went on the record as saying;

Where work at height cannot be avoided, it should be properly planned, adequately supervised and carried out in a safe manner using appropriate equipment.”
