A Bow Shackle is an 'O' shaped metal link which is closed by a bolt. Similar to an Anchor Shackle, the rounded design of both shackles allows Bow Shackles to take loads from many directions without developing a side load. When compared to a Chain Shackle, the more rounded shape of the Bow Shackle means they can also handle a thicker strap with ease.

What is a Bow Shackle used for?

A shackle consists of a body and a bolt which can be used to link to other items. They are primarily used to link different equipment together in rigging systems as they can be removed and attached easily.

Bow Shackles can also be used to recover vehicles as they can cater to most vehicle weights available. Many off-roaders will take Bow Shackles in their vehicle recovery kit when driving over rough terrain in order to cover all bases. The Bow Shackle works well for this because it offers more space in its rounded body for chains and straps which will be used to recover vehicles.

How to use a Bow Shackle

Before using a Bow Shackle, be sure to take notes of these rules on how to use a Bow Shackle.

  • Connect a Bow Shackle to a sling, rope or a load by slotting the bow around the item and securing it with the pin.
  • When attaching a Bow Shackle to a sling, always attach the slings to the bow in order to not damage the pin.
  • If using a Bow Shackle with a wire rope, be sure the wire rope is always smaller or equal to the diameter of the Bow Shackle.
  • Make sure your Bow Shackle is not left in excessively high or low temperatures as this can damage the shackle.

A Lever Hoist is a piece of high-quality equipment used to lift and lower heavy loads without the aid of machinery. Lever Hoists have the ability to lift items in most positions, including horizontally. Different from the Chain Block or Hoist, which can only lift items vertically, the Lever Hoist's ability to lift items horizontally is a great benefit.

A Level Hoist is usually fitted with a heavy-duty safety cap to hold your items comfortably and a top swivel connection which will allow easy lifting from all angles. The hand wheel can then be turned to release or retract as much chain length as required. The ratchet lever attached to the side of the lever hoist allows the chain to be free-willed when placed in the neutral position. When placed in the up position, it tightens the chain allowing the load to be lifted with the tension.

Finally, to lift the load, crank the heavy-duty lever until your load has reached a suitable height. To lower the load, the ratchet lever must be switched to the downward position and the heavy-duty lever cranked to lower the chain.

Here's a video from one of our experts on how to use one of our 750KG Industrial Quality Lever Hoists:

Our Range of Lever Hoists

They're available to hire if you only need to use a lever hoist for a short period of time. To hire one of our lever hoists, simply click 'hire me' on the product page and then 'enquire' once you get to the checkout. A block and tackle is a system consisting of two or more pulleys with a rope, cable or chain between them. This system can be used to lift and lower heavy loads.

In a standard block and tackle system, the chain is wound around two wheels. When the chain is pulled, it winds around the wheels and begins to lift the load that's attached to the chain.

A chainblock is an example of a block and tackle system. Optionally, chainblocks can be attached to lifting slings or chain bags for a more controlled lift.

How does a block and tackle work?

A block and tackle system is typically made up of a lifting chain, a hand chain and a grabbing hook.

First, the chainblock needs to be connected to the load via the grabbing hook. Then, when the hand chain is pulled, the chain tightens its grip on the wheel and forms a loop inside the mechanism - causing a tension which lifts the load from the ground.

This system can be used to lift loads manually, although electric block and tackle systems are popular because they require less physical exertion.

What can a block and tackle be used for?

Due to their lifting capabilities, block and tackle systems are commonly used in garages to remove engines from cars. Because they can be operated by one person, chainblocks are a wonderfully efficient way to complete lifting jobs which may otherwise have required two or more workers.

Block and tackle systems are also used on construction sites and on assembly lines.

Rigging equipment refers to the devices and elements used to lift and manoeuvre objects safely, as part of a planned system implemented by a team of riggers. This encompasses a variety of components which are used to secure and distribute the load in question, in order to facilitate the moving process and ensure that it is completed successfully. Industries which often require the services of rigging equipment include construction, engineering and event staging.

Like all lifting operations, hoisting and rigging should be performed with public and employee safety as a primary focus. In order to comply with health and safety legislation along with industry standards, organisations should carefully consider two following elements:

  1. Operation Planning: Before the lifting applications begin, teams should carefully consider the demands of the lift and conduct a thorough risk assessment.

  2. Equipment: The first point will dictate how the rigging equipment is selected and used. Riggers must ensure that the overall rigging setup and individual elements are appropriate for the size and weight of the load in question, in order to avoid overloading the equipment, which can lead to damage and serious safety hazards. The rigging equipment itself should also be sourced from reputable suppliers, in order to ensure that the products are of a suitable standard and quality. In order to maintain this quality, the items should then be regularly tested to ensure that it continues to meet safety standards.

What are the different types of rigging equipment?
