Which Trolley Jack is Right for Me?

As a general rule of thumb, most specialists maintain that you need a jack that’s capable of lifting around ¾ of your vehicle’s total weight.

So, for example, the average Vauxhall Astra weighs around 1300kg so, in theory, you would only need a one tonne trolley jack to cover it.

Luckily, our lowest trolley jacks start at a capacity of three tonnes so, Astra-owners nationwide, considered yourselves covered.

All of our trolley jacks are easy to manoeuvre, making them glide effortlessly in and out of position, making light work of your heavy lifting.

According to statistics published by the Health & Safety Executive, approximately 26% of UK workplace fatalities in 2018 came as a result of falling from height.

That sobering statistic highlights just how dangerous working at height can be and, moreover, just how important it is to take the correct precautions before engaging in such activities.

If working at height is a big part of your job, keep yourself and others protected by being mindful of the risks involved.

Here’s a rundown of some of the most important things to consider when working at height.

working at height, fall arrest, fall protection

Take Note of Legislation

Laws are implemented for a reason, so it’s important to take note of the relevant legislation. When it comes to working at height, this point is extremely important.

Make sure that you fully understand what applies to you and take the appropriate actions to adhere to these rulings at all times.

For workers, knowing and following these guidelines can help ensure that the working conditions are safe and risks are kept to a minimum.

Meanwhile, for employers, it can also help ensure all actions are done by the book, protecting the workers while also protecting the company from liability claims in the event of an accident.

Assess the Risks

Like any potentially dangerous situation, a comprehensive risk assessment is vital in preparing for the task at hand and can help highlight any areas of concern.

Conducting a thorough risk assessment can not only allow you to minimise the dangers but also potentially allow you to eliminate them altogether.

Should the risks be unavoidable, the identification of these dangers allows for preventative measures to be put in place, such as a fall arrest or fall restraint system.

Knowledge is Power

It’s the employer’s responsibility to provide the worker with the relevant training for the task at hand. This point is included in the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and is naturally extremely important to take into consideration.

Suitable training can prepare workers for the proposed job and allow them to carry them out safely. Only those that have the relevant level of experience and training should be authorised to carry out the corresponding task.

Prepare for the Worst

While every step should be taken to avoid a devastating accident, failure to prepare for the worst is not only foolish and short-sighted but also potentially very dangerous.

Be sure to formulate and implement an appropriate rescue plan to keep all parties covered in the event of an unfortunate mishap. This includes supplying the appropriate emergency rescue equipment.

Which leads us nicely to our next point…

Come Equipped

In order to ensure you are completely protected in the event of a fall, it’s vital that the correct equipment is used at all times. Often referred to as PPE (Personal Protection Equipment), this is the last resort standing between you and the ground in the event of a worst-case scenario.

It’s important to remember that not all fall protection equipment is universal and some protection measures will be more appropriate for a specific job than others. For more information on the different kinds of safety restraints, check out our blog on overhead and horizontal safety lines.

In addition to supplying equipment for working at height, we also provide inspection and certification of such equipment. For advice and guidance on what equipment may be best for you, get in touch today to speak with one of your specialist advisors.

A full body harness is a harness designed to hold the wearer upright in the event of a fall from height. If worn correctly, a full body harness will distribute the energy generated during free-fall across the wearers' body evenly, reducing the potential for serious injury.

Full-body harnesses should be the first choice when it comes to working at height because they offer:

  • Freedom of movement for the worker to get his or her job done.
  • Support for all body parts including; hips, legs, chest and shoulders.

How are full body harnesses designed?

When looking at how full body harnesses are designed, there are a few common features that you can expect to see on any full body harness:

When should you wear a full body harness?

Before you carry out any work at height, you should always assess the potential risks. Unfortunately, falling from height is a common cause of injuries and fatalities in the workplace. It's important that you know when a full body harness is, or isn't required. Your employee should carry out a full risk assessment before you carry out any work at height, notifying you if a full body harness is required while you complete your tasks.

Your employer might ask you to wear a full body harness if:

  • You are working at height – The working at height regulations 2005 define working at height as “Work in any place, including a place at or below ground level, where a person could fall a distance liable to cause personal injury”.
  • You're trained and authorised to work at height.

Choosing the right full body harness

In situations where a fall from height is a serious risk, you don't want to be putting on any old harness and making your ascent. Choosing a full body harness that suits your weight and job requirements is paramount for your safety. Your full body harness should always:

  • Be easy to use and easy to adjust
  • Fit you properly
  • Be free from damage, wear or tear
  • Allow you to move freely and easily as you work

All of our full body harnesses can be found in our height safety range. We stock a variety of full body harnesses, including hi-viz full body harnessesfull body rescue harnesses and harnesses and lanyard rated to 140kgs

A Doncaster based construction firm has been fined £10,000 and ordered to pay £803 in legal costs after one of their young workers suffered a serious fall.

The unnamed 18-year-old employee was working on the first floor of a house being built in West Butterwick, Scunthorpe. The worker was using a trowel to remove mortar from some breeze blocks when he stepped backwards and accidentally fell through an unguarded stairway. The injuries he sustained from the fall include; two fractured ribs and contusions.

The HSE investigated the incident and concluded that Trumax Building Ltd had not put the required safety precautions in place. Neither a proprietary guardrail system or traditional scaffold guardrails were used to prevent people from falling through the opening.

Trumax Building Ltd pleaded guilty to breaching Regulation 6 (3) of the Work at Height Regulations 2005. The HSE Inspector who handled this case said:

'This incident could so easily have been avoided by simply carrying out the correct control measures and safe working practices, particularly to protect young and inexperienced workers. In this case, someone suffered serious injuries that could have been avoided by installing guardrails around the stairway opening to prevent workers from falling from height.'

Here at SafetyLiftinGear, we work tirelessly to provide the PPE and equipment required to keep workers safe while working at height. Our Height Safety category features a range of products that can ensure safety whether your line of work is construction, tree surgery, or any other profession.
