In the past week, the team at SafetyLiftinGear have been busy helping out with an exciting project in partnership with lifting specialists, King Lifting!

The project was focused around helping to lift Dorian, a restored ship used in both World Wars, namely during the evacuation of Dunkirk.

King Lifting had previously purchased a number of round and webbing lifting slings from us to assist with other lifting applications but in order to lift the Dunkirk ship, further equipment was required.

This time around, SLG supplied a 12ft Modular Spreader Beam frame (4 x 4 meter) with associated shackles in order for the weight of the ship to be properly carried (tare weight of the boat on the crane was 9.7 tonnes), helping it on its way to the next part of its journey.

Eight long years have passed since restoration started on Dorian in 2011, but now she is ready to take to the sea again, ready for the Return to Dunkirk. Organised by the Association of Dunkirk Little Ships to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Operation Dynamo in May 2020, SafetyLiftinGear is proud to have played a small part in the ship’s long and historical story.

We have an extensive range of the spreader beams used to help lift the Dunkirk ship in stock, ready for both hire and full purchase, depending on your needs! And just like many other products in our vast collection, our beams are able to be customised with different configurations and extra struts. You can browse our spreader beams and see images from the project below.

spreader vs lifting beams difference

If you need to complete a job that involves lifting or moving large and heavy objects or large fragile loads, investing in a spreader/lifting beam can make a huge difference to the efficiency of the operation. Both types of beam distribute the weight of the load to make it more stable but do so in slightly different ways.

Spreader Beams

Spreader beams have lugs at either end which attach to the crane’s sling and two lugs on their underside that attach to the load. The way their lugs are orientated means the load taken by the spreader beam is mainly compressive, so they can carry a great deal of weight compared to their size.

At SafetyLiftinGear we stock a huge range of modular spreader beams that can support weights from 2 tonnes up to 70 tonnes and are adjustable in length, making them an incredibly versatile piece of equipment that can be used for a variety of different jobs.

Lifting Beams

Lifting beams are different to spreader beams because they attach to the crane from a single central point and can have several load attachment points along their base or adjustable points as shown above.

Lifting beams are more appropriate for lifting large unstable objects and can be used where low headroom is an issue.  The beam is subjected to bending forces from the load and so may be large when lifting heavier loads.

Another way that these versatile lifting beams can be used, is in reverse. This entails using the underside attachments to connect a single heavy object to two cranes. This can be very useful if you need to lift an object that could not be moved using a single crane.

We supply lifting beams that are capable of lifting weights from 500 – 2000kg. They’re made of high-quality aluminium meaning they are lighter and stronger than other lifting beams. Another versatile choice. Larger units can be supplied to special order.

Lifting wide, heavy loads requires you to attach a sling to either end of the load enabling you to lift it efficiently. But the problem with this, is that it increases the horizontal forces on the sling because the angles of the sling are less than 90 degrees. These forces add to the weight that's being lifted of the load, so this requires a larger lifting force to lift the load. Spreader Beams are hugely beneficial because it eliminates the amount of horizontal forces applied on slings, allowing you to have a larger lifting force. Spreader Beams are popular with indoor cranes because the beams are built with a single point connection, so they take less crane height to lift due to there being no rigging above the beam.
Here are Safety Lifting Gear we have an excellent range of Modular Spreader Beams, each with a different working load limit and length in beams. All of our beams are versatile and fully certified, and tested. If you're looking for a strong, cost effective Spreader beam, you've come to the right place!
