scaffolders

When working on scaffolding there is a significant fall risk that you need to be aware of. Every scaffold worker knows that having the right safety equipment is important before you make a start on a job. There are all kinds of harnesses on the market, it can be hard to know which one is the right option for your work scenario. Don't worry, we're here to help!

Generally, the best harnesses for scaffolders are lightweight and don't restrict movement. Often, the best place to connect a worker to the scaffold is behind them. This way, any ropes or lanyards will be kept well out of the way.

Here are our recommendations if you're looking for the best harness to use on scaffolding.

Elasticated Shock Absorbing Lanyards

These elasticated shock-absorbing lanyards come with scaffold hooks, making them incredibly easy to use. We find these are some of the best lanyards for use on scaffolding because the elasticated webbing prevents the webbing from trailing around and becoming a trip hazard. Features like this are incredibly useful when you're working at height for prolonged periods of time. We'd recommend using these lanyards with our P34EL and P50 scaffold safety harnesses.

Safety Lanyards

When working at height, a safety lanyard connects a harness to a secure anchor point, preventing the wearer from falling to the ground.

There are two types of safety lanyard, and it's important to know the difference between them.

Restraint Lanyard vs. Fall Arrest Lanyard

A restraint lanyard is designed to prevent falls by prohibiting the wearer from reaching a hazardous position where a fall might occur. For example, one may wear a safety harness and a restraint lanyard while working on an aerial work platform - the length of the lanyard will have been specifically chosen to keep the wearer safely on the platform.

A fall arrest lanyard must be used in situations where fall hazards cannot be avoided. Fall arrest lanyards have an energy-absorbing element that, in the event of a fall, reduces the impact force exerted on the wearer's body and the anchoring point.

More Information: Fall Arrest vs. Fall Restraint

What Are Safety Lanyards Made Of?

Restraint lanyards (which, remember, are intended to stop people reaching a position where a fall could occur) are typically made of kernmantle rope. Our kernmantle rope lanyards have a minimum breaking strength of 22kN.

We can also supply lanyards with elasticated webbing to help reduce possible trip/snagging hazards.

Both types of lanyard can be purchased from SafetyLiftinGear's Lanyards department.

Connectors

A safety lanyard may be supplied with a variety of different connectors, including:

  • Screw gate karabiner
  • Automatic locking gate
  • Scaffold hook
  • Thimble eye

Maximum Lifespan

The G-Force lanyards we sell here at SafetyLiftinGear have a maximum lifespan of 10 years from the date of manufacture (assuming that you use and store the product correctly and subject it to regular, thorough examinations). This maximum lifespan should not be exceeded, and the equipment must be removed from service once the 10-year period has elapsed.

Being able to provide our customers with new equipment that enables them to not only perform and complete tasks as quickly and easily as possible but in the safest possible way, is always one of our key goals here at SafetyLiftinGear, something we have once again achieved with the inclusion of SQUIDS Power Tool Brackets. These small but very handy attachments allow your power tools to be easily connected to your tool lanyard, enabling you to carry and transport your tools around without any additional hassle.

SQUIDS 3796 Power Tool Bracket Drill and Impact Driver Tool Trap

As most power tools such as grinders, impact drivers and cordless drills do not possess any attachment points whereby you are able to clip them onto a tool lanyard, our range of specially designed brackets are extremely useful in helping workers with the above. Due to these connection points not being readily available, a hazardous environment is created with the risk of accidents being elevated when working at height. The ability to tether your power tools should be part of a wider fall protection plan in order to decrease the risk of dropped objects while working and improving the overall safety of the workplace. Each bracket comes with a number of metric fasteners in order to mount a variety of power tools from leading brands such as DeWalt, Bosch and Makita. You can view a number of these high-quality brackets below.

Installation

Installing your new power tool bracket could not be easier! The one-time assembly produces a fast and simple one-step attachment to tether a lanyard to your tools. Simply fasten the included tool bracket and labels onto screw ports intended for accessory belt hooks. Once the required has been applied to the anchor point, you then attach a tool lanyard to the bracket tether point to securely tether your tools. If you do not own a tool lanyard or need a new one, please visit our range of Tool Lanyards here to purchase yours today.

For further information on tethering your power tools using your new tool brackets, watch our instructional video below.
