Lifting clamp with beam

We stock a wide range of lifting clamps here at SafetyLiftinGear; however, it's important to note that not all lifting clamps play the same role.

In fact, certain clamps are simply not suitable for some jobs, while others are tailor-made with a specific function in mind.

To help you get your head around the specifics, we've compiled this short list to help you get a firm grasp of the different types of lifting clamps we offer.

Beam clamp

Beam Clamps

Incredibly robust and versatile, these hard-wearing lifting clamps are more than capable of pulling their weight...and much more! With a maximum capacity of up 10 tonnes (check the specifications of your chosen product before purchasing), our beam clamps offer a reliable lifting solution that won't buckle under the pressure.

Plate clamp

Plate Clamps

Specifically designed for use with heavy steel plates, our plate lifting clamps provide a safe and secure method of lifting heavy metal sheets.

Heavy-duty plate lifting clamps come in three different categories:

  • Vertical Plate Clamps - Equipped with hardened steel jaws, our vertical plate clamps effectively lift steel plates from a horizontal position into a vertical position. We currently offer a variety of sizes, with weight limits ranging from 0.5 tonnes up to 5 tonnes.

  • Horizontal Plate Clamps - Supplied in pairs, these twin clamps allow you to lift steel plates while maintaining a horizontal position (when used with a 2 leg chain sling). Our horizontal clamps are currently available in 1.5 tone, 3 tonne and 5 tonne models.

  • Multi-Directional Clamps - While most lifting clamps are either vertical or horizontal, we also offer multi-directional clamps that cover both options. These include two suspension holes for either vertical or horizontal suspension.

Lifting Grabs, Lugs and Hooks

Certain lifting jobs may require the use of additional equipment to modify your lifting mechanism.

Block grabs, container lugs and pipe hooks can enable you to lift unconventional heavy-duty items that are otherwise awkward to manoeuvre.

Specialist Lifting Clamps

In addition to the products listed above, there are also a wide variety of specialist clamps created with one singular purpose in mind:

Ideal for non-metal objects, such as plasterboard, stone and wood. Commonly used in the construction industry.

Specialist clamp used for lifting oil and chemical drums, as well as other drum-shaped objects.

As the name suggests, this is a specialist clamp used for kerbstones.

These clamps are specifically designed to raise, transport and lay manhole covers.

Equipped with rope and shackles for easy release, these products provide a great solution for those looking to remove steel piling from the ground.

Designed for manoeuvring metal, concrete and plastic piping into position.

Unlike the other clamps in this section, pulling clamps are intended to position heavy loads prior to industrial application.

Ideal for the rail industry, these specialist clamps are used for lifting and positioning railway track into place.

Stainless steel hand winch

If you’re on the hunt for a lifting winch, it won’t take you long to realise that there’s a surprisingly wide variety of winches out there on the market. As such, knowing which winch is which is well worth it!

To make things a little easier for you, we’ve outlined a few of the most important things to consider when buying a winch in this helpful, handy winch-buying guide.

IMPORTANT: Please note that these winches are designed for lifting goods, not people. If you need a winch that is suitable for lifting people, please contact our Sales team.

Hand Winch vs Electric Winch

One of the most common conundrums faced by winch buyers is deciding between hand winches and electric winches. Both can be great options, but here are a couple of key factors to consider:

Economy vs Efficiency

Hand winches are typically less expensive than their electric counterparts; however, electric winches are widely considered to be far more efficient.

Muscular Endurance vs Battery Life

Both options are capable of lifting a heavy load, but the electric option won’t tire and is likely to be able to handle a heavier lift. That being said, even the electric winch will need to be powered by something and can drain a car battery flat with extended use.

How powerful does your winch need to be?

Most winches come equipped with a winch rating, declaring how much weight they can safely pull. However, to make matters slightly more confusing, these ratings don't always indicate exactly how much a winch can handle. The ratings are more of a guide to how much your winch can take under perfect conditions. There are lots of variables that can affect the performance of your winch, ranging from engine size to angle of the cable.

One of the most important influences on winch power is the number of layers on the winch line. As odd as it sounds, the more layers of cable wrapped around a winch, the less power it is capable of exerting.

For example, multiple layers of cable on one spool can lead to an overall power loss of up to 40%. That’s almost half of the optimal capacity, so keep that in mind if you’re planning on hauling some heavy loads.

How to mount your winch

Now that you’ve decided on exactly which winch you want, it’s also important to take into account how you plan to mount your winch for the task at hand. Vehicle winches are straightforward enough, but if you plan on using your winch in a factory/warehouse setting, you may have some decisions to make.

Floor- and wall-based mounts are popular options, providing a static and sturdy fixed base for lifting. The choice is yours, but wall-based winch mounts may allow for better use of space in your work area.

A selection of winches

Hand-operated, electrical, hydraulic, portable...winches come in a variety of shapes, sizes and types. As a result, knowing which winch is right for you can be a lot harder than simply pointing, picking and paying.

Selecting the correct winch can be especially important when you’re buying or hiring a winch for your business. A poor winch that’s not fit for purpose could lead to disaster!

Luckily, the SafetyLiftinGear team are here to help.

IMPORTANT: Please note that these winches are designed for lifting goods, not people. If you need a winch that is suitable for lifting people, please contact our Sales team.

What is a winch?

A winch is a mechanical pulley system that's equipped with a rope or cable for lifting or haulage purposes.

However, there are lots of different winch types out there, with subtle variations between all of them, ranging from the mechanical drum winch to the mechanical capstan winch. Naturally, this leads to a lot of confusion when it comes to choosing the right winch for you.

What winch do I need?

The correct winch for you and your business will largely depend on your line of work. For example, a tree surgeon may require a different winch to a mechanic, while a fishing boat will likely have different needs to a recovery vehicle.

That being said, winches are typically used for three primary purposes: lifting, lowering and pulling. For these purposes, both manual and electric winches are perfectly fine solutions.

Hand Winches

It's easy to assume that manual winches are less capable than their electric counterparts, but hand winches are ideal for most tasks and surprisingly capable even in situations requiring some serious heavy lifting.

They are extremely user-friendly, with little to no maintenance costs. Speaking of costs, hand winches are also notably cheaper than their electrical counterparts, offering an economical solution to your winching needs.

Best of all, they don’t rely on an external power source, and are as reliable as the person operating them. However, this can be a double-edged sword: hand winches – being manually operated – naturally put more exertion on the operator.

Electric Winches

Electric winches also offer a litany of benefits, not least their autonomy. Requiring minimal input from the operator, efficiency is the primary selling point of the electric winch, capable of hauling a heavy load from point A to point B in mere minutes.

Electric winches can also be safer than hand winches, which are better suited to lighter lifts. While electric winches are typically more costly than manually-operated products, they are a smart option if very heavy lifting is par for the course in your business.

While it doesn’t require human exertion, it’s worth remembering that an electric winch does need to get its energy from somewhere. For vehicle winches, this energy comes from the car battery, so be careful to ensure you don't end up with a flat battery!

What winch offers the best value for money?

While hand winches tend to be more economical, that doesn’t mean you can’t get an electric winch at an affordable price.

Here at SafetyLiftinGear.com, we offer a comprehensive collection of winches to make sure you always have the right tools for the task at hand.

Our winching products are capable of lifting loads ranging from 150kg all the way up to a tonne and beyond. Some of our heavy-duty winches are capable of lifting over five tonnes!

We also offer a range of winch ropes, all of which come with a latch hook for easy attachment. Strong, sturdy and reliable, these ropes are capable of hauling vehicles and even pulling down trees with ease.

Hydraulic nut splitter

Nut splitters are a great last resort if you need to remove a stubborn nut from an equally stubborn bolt.

But - how does a nut splitter work? In a nutshell (sorry), nut splitters work by providing a 'get out of jail free' card for nuts that are frozen in place, corroded, damaged, seized, or simply screwed on too tightly to remove.
